Medical Treatments For Hair Loss
Medical Treatments That Help Hair Loss And Thinning
There are several medical treatment methods and medications that aim to stop hair loss, and trigger the growth of existing hair. It is very important to determine the cause of hair loss in order to use right medications and treatment methods. Our doctors recommend patients to try the medical treatment alternatives to treat hair loss before age 25.
There are different medical treatments for hair loss such as pills, laser therapies, pro injections etc. 2 commonly used medications are Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia). Minoxidil (Rogaine) can be bought without a prescription, and it comes as a liquid tube or foam. It needs to be rubbed on the scalp daily, and after at least 6 months of consistent treatment, hair loss is expected to stop and regrowth is expected to begin.
Finasteride (Propecial) is a prescribed medicine for male patients. It aims to stop hair loss and start hair grow by reducing the levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone, the hormone that triggers hair loss. The medicine doesn’t affect testosterone levels, and it can be used as a supplementary treatment method after hair transplantation operations.
PRP (Platelet RIch Plasma) obtained from the patients own blood may be injected in the scalp to stop the hair loss and stimulate hair growth. A small amount of blood is taken from the patient and processed to obtain the PRP. It promotes growth from the follicles, and also trigger thickening of the existing hair. Advanced cases of hair loss may not benefit from PRP treatments.
Low-level laser therapies are shown to improve hair density in hair loss cases related to genetics, however more studies are needed to see the long term effects.
