The dentist will examine the tooth to be pulled and evaluate the overall oral health of the patient. Patients should share their medical history with their dentist, including previous conditions and operations. Before starting the procedure, the dentist will numb the area using local anesthetics. In rare cases general anesthesia might be chosen.

Using forceps, the dentist grasps the tooth and pulls it gently until it is unattached to the jawbone. In some cases the dentist may need to cut the gum tissue that covers the tooth to loosen it before making the extraction. Hard to pull tooth may need to be removed in pieces. Sometimes the dentist may use self dissolving stitches to close the gum tissue and protect the area.

After a tooth extraction, the patient can go home to recover. Complete healing should not last more than a few days. To minimize any discomfort and risk of complications, patients should follow the dentists advises strictly. A soft diet is recommended until the site is completely healed. No smoking is advised since it can inhibit the healing process. Keeping a good oral hygiene is important to prevent the infection, but the extraction site should be avoided while brushing.
