Dental Crowns can be made from various materials such as metals (gold etc.), stainless steel, ceramic, porcelain fused metal, or resin. Two most commonly used types of dental crowns are Metal-Porcelain Crowns and Zirconium-Porcelain Crowns.
A Metal-Porcelain Crown has a metal base that is covered with white porcelain to achieve a natural look. This type of crowns are durable and comfortable, but they can’t be used everywhere in the mouth due to fitting issue. In time, a black line along the gum line may occur. It is recommended to replace the crowns every 7-8 years to prevent this and make sure the overall oral health is good.
Zirconium-Porcelain crowns are the latest method in the field. They are incredibly durable and aesthetically pleasing. The center of the crown is composed of 100% white metal, and it is covered with porcelain to create the look of a natural teeth. Unlike Metal-Porcelain crowns, no black line will appear along the gums. It is a healthier and more durable option comparing to other methods such as whole – ceramic or laminated crowns.
