A hole is drilled into the tooth. The infection and decayed tissues are removed through the hole. Once the tooth is clean from the infected tissues, root canals are scaped and scrubbed all the way down. Depending on the case, the dentist may choose to seal the tooth on the same day or wait for a few days. If the patient needs to wait, a temporary filling is used to protect the area from any contaminants such as food particles. In some cases the dentist may choose to cover the tooth with a crown or other material to make sure it is protected in the long run.

Patients are expected to get back to their daily lives the next day. It is normal for the tooth to feel sensitive following the procedure, specially if the tooth was infected in the past.
